In case you wondered just how out-of-touch startup culture has gotten, today I saw a post where someone hypothesized somewhere you could pay like $5 to play with your dog outside, kinda like a backyard but not attached to your house

They invented public parks, y'all

One thing I will have to explore, however, is setting up automated water systems for when I go on extended trips. Perhaps with an Arduino or a Raspberry Pi, a really fun project.

Infrequently am I away for that long, but when I no longer live with my flatmate, I can't allow my green family suffer. 🌺

What if I'd connect an alarm clock to my rpi and let strangers on the internet activate it whenever they want

Need to shed some recurring expenses.

That has consequences for mastodon.host services.

Over the course of the next month or two, I am going to finish migrating all the services I have hosted on rented servers to in-house hosting, mostly on arm processors and on sbc ( small board computers ).

I will be able to migrate:
- soteria.m.h ( already done )
- plume.m.h ( should be pretty easy )
- mastodon.host DB is going to be hosted on an old lenovo laptop that performs very well.
- mastodon by itself still needs to be figured out ( either on an old MAC laptop too, or find a way to build a small x86_64 machine with decent perfs to handle the bloat ).
- relay.m.h being python is very easy
- funkwhale being python is very easy too
- xmpp

the main issue is with hosting peertube.m.h .

Hosting the nodejs service is not too much of a problem, it should run on a raspberry, but doing the transcoding is going to take forever on such a raspberry.

I am considering either dropping out of peertube.m.h and giving the subdomain and server to someone who wishes to continue with it, or disabling transcoding and just serving from home.

Any comments ?

Hello! I'm new to the fediverse so I hope I'm doing this right. Is there any way to filter messages on the federated timeline by language? Or is the only way through english only relay selection?

In 1998, a programmer who had been working on Y2K fixes started to get anxious because he couldn't believe how pervasive the problem was. He switched from company to company trying to get away from it, but everywhere he went he became regarded as the Y2K expert and immediately became the team lead for that company's Y2K contingencies. He finally had a nervous breakdown, quit his job, and decided he wanted to be knocked unconscious when the Y2K actually came about.

A month before Y2K he was put into an artificial coma and cooled down to a near cryogenic easily sustained long term life support.

Unfortunately the life support notification system had a Y2K bug, and no one revived him for 8000 years.

Finally he was found and revived. He woke up, and saw himself surrounded by lots of glass, light, stainless steel, and tall beautiful people in white robes. He asked if he was in Heaven.

They replied, "No, this is Chicago. Actually but it's a lot like Heaven to someone like you."

"Someone like me?"

"You are from the 20th century. Many of the problems that existed in your lifetime have been solved for thousands of years. There is no hunger and no disease. There is no scarcity, or strife between races and creeds."

"What year is it now?"

"Yeah, about that - it's the year 9,998. You see, the year 10,000 is coming up, and we understand you know something called COBOL?"
